Reflections on Life’s Unexpected Turns
January 4, 2025There was a time when I believed putting myself first was selfish—that my worth was defined by how much I could give to others, how many roles I could juggle, how little I could ask for in return. I know I’m not alone in this.
For so many women, self-love is often treated as an afterthought—something we’ll get to once the work is done, once the kids are settled, once the world feels a little less chaotic. But if recent years have taught us anything, it’s this: The world is always in turmoil.
And in that turmoil, loving ourselves—boldly, unapologetically, and without guilt—is an act of resistance.
Why Prioritizing Self-Love is Revolutionary
Self-love isn’t about bubble baths and spa days (though those are lovely). It’s about something much deeper:
✔ The radical decision to choose yourself, even when the world tells you not to
✔ Creating boundaries that protect your energy, time, and emotional well-being
✔ Walking away from spaces that shrink you, silence you, or make you feel small
When you love yourself, you shift the way you show up in the world. You make decisions from a place of wholeness, not obligation. You pour into others from an overflowing cup, not an empty one.
According to Psychology Today, self-love entails accepting yourself wholeheartedly, treating yourself with kindness and respect, and prioritizing your physical and emotional health. This means that by choosing yourself, you are not just surviving—you’re thriving.
The Toll of External Chaos on Mental and Emotional Well-Being
We are constantly bombarded with messages that tell us: Do more. Be more. Give more. And let’s be honest, the state of the world doesn’t always help. Politics, social unrest, economic pressures—all of it can feel overwhelming.
Many of us carry the weight of:
✔ Trying to hold our families together while juggling personal struggles
✔ Feeling guilty for resting when society glorifies exhaustion
✔ Absorbing negativity from the news and social media, leaving us drained
A study from the National Institute of Mental Health highlights that chronic stress leads to burnout, emotional exhaustion, and even physical health issues. This is why prioritizing self-love is not just an option—it’s a necessity.
Practical Ways to Integrate Self-Love into Your Daily Life
Choosing self-love doesn’t mean abandoning your responsibilities. It means recognizing that you matter just as much as the people you care for.
Here are a few ways to start:
1️⃣ Protect Your Energy with Boundaries
Saying “no” is a complete sentence. You do not owe anyone an explanation for prioritizing your peace.
✔ Limit access to people who drain you
✔ Unplug from negative news and social media overload
✔ Give yourself permission to rest without guilt
2️⃣ Speak to Yourself with Kindness
We often extend grace to others but are our own harshest critics. Self-love starts with the way we talk to ourselves.
✔ Replace self-criticism with self-compassion
✔ Start your day with affirmations (e.g., “I am worthy of love and care”)
✔ Remind yourself that progress, not perfection, is the goal
3️⃣ Create a Ritual of Self-Care
Self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s a non-negotiable part of well-being. Whether it’s five minutes or an hour, make time for what fills your soul.
✔ Journaling to reflect on your thoughts and emotions
✔ Movement (walking, dancing, stretching) to reconnect with your body
✔ Stillness—whether that’s meditation, prayer, or simply breathing
Final Thoughts: Loving Yourself Without Guilt
If no one has told you this today: You are enough. You don’t have to earn your worth. You don’t have to wait until you’ve “proven” yourself to rest, to take up space, to be loved—especially by yourself.
Self-love is not selfish. It is the foundation for everything you give to the world. And in times of uncertainty, it becomes even more vital. Because a world filled with women who love themselves freely, fully, and unapologetically is a world that cannot be broken.
So today, I ask you: What is one small way you can choose yourself?
