Stay informed. Stay empowered. Stay ready.
The impact of harassment on youth is very real. It can lead to trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, decreased class participation, and thoughts about transferring schools. Right To Be believes that stopping harassment amongst young people depends on empowering youth to take action themselves. This one-hour training recommended for grades 8 – 12 offers a specially adapted version of our 5Ds of bystander intervention methodology. The training can offer an intersectional approach (examining harassment in all forms) or specifically address bystander intervention to stop gender-based harassment, anti-LGBTQ+ harassment, or race-based harassment amongst youth. We begin by offering participants an understanding of what harassment is, how it’s different than bullying, and that it can happen anywhere – at school or on campus, on playgrounds, on buses, or in stores and other places of business. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention – Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, and Direct – and teach participants how to prioritize their own safety while intervening. Then, through our expanded interactive learning experience, we incorporate realistic practice scenarios and group feedback sessions to help participants achieve an applied understanding of the 5Ds concepts and leave them feeling more confident to intervene the next time they witness harassment happen amongst their peers.
