‘Sinners’ Honored Juke Joints. Today, They’re Fighting to Stay Open.
April 25, 2025Public Citizen is working with a national network of advocacy and community partners to develop democratic solutions to climate change and the home insurance crisis. This remote internship position will provide an intern with the opportunity to hone their research and writing skills while gaining familiarity with a range of advocacy strategies.
Across the country, communities are already paying the price for climate change through an unexpected source: insurance premiums. As the costs of extreme weather grow, insurance companies are raising rates and dropping coverage. At the same time, these same companies are stalling the transition to clean energy by prioritizing insurance for oil & gas clients. As states become a crucial battleground for climate and insurance policy, Public Citizen is developing policy campaigns that advance climate, housing and economic justice.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent writing skills, particularly for a general audience, and the ability to synthesize complex materials on new issues. No prior subject matter knowledge is required, but some prior experience with progressive advocacy is preferred. Candidates should be self-motivated and sensitive to the needs of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
Responsibilities will depend on experience but will include the following:
- Drafting blogs, fact sheets and educational materials for the Public Citizen website.
- Compiling literature reviews and research memos to support policy recommendations.
- Monitoring and briefing staff on relevant news, legislation and events.
To apply: To apply, please send a resume and two writing samples to cfabian@citizen.org with the subject line “Insurance Policy Intern.” Cover letters are optional. Please note whether you are applying to work full or part-time. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
Public Citizen offers unpaid internships (academic credit can be arranged) and a small number of paid internships based on financial need and funding availability. Interns who are approved for funding will be paid on an hourly basis at $17.50 per hour with a total internship duration of no more than 320 hours. The application deadline for paid internships has closed for summer 2025 but remains open for the fall 2025.
